The Melbourne Football Club has made further inroads into erasing its financial debt after launching its 2009 Debt Demolition campaign at a major function at the MCG last night.

The event was attended by over 200 of Melbourne’s most loyal supporters, raising a total of $725,000.

The $725,000 raised is in addition to the $3.1 million contributed last year, bringing the total amount raised through the Debt Demolition campaign to $3.82 million and reducing the Club’s overall financial debt to well below $2 million.

Attendees were buoyed on by a video message from Club President Jim Stynes, as well as moving speeches by some of the Club’s greats, including Ron Barassi, Garry Lyon and James McDonald. Melbourne Vice President Don McLardy said, ‘The support we received, and the money we raised on the night, was just sensational. To make such progress into further demolishing our debt in one night has provided a fantastic start to our Debt Demolition campaign for 2009. These are tough times, and we appreciate the contribution that so many have made on this wonderful night – not only this year, but at the same occasion last year as well. Every bit counts for the good of the Melbourne Football Club.

'We are aiming to raise $1 million during the month of August, and this is a fantastic start to our Debt Demolition campaign.'

The Club will now send a letter to all members seeking their involvement in the ongoing fundraising campaign, which will include the Club’s Demons’ Ball on 22 August.
